Increasing use of computers in education raises questions about the efficiency of computer assisted instruction (CAI) software packages used to improve classroom tutorials.
Most CAI programs follow the Skinnerian approach in modeling cognitive process. Skinner predicted that these teaching softwares and machines will free classtime for teachers. Students and teachers thus forced to follow the program’s procedures and accept the program’s routine promptings.
As a result, such CAI programs severely limit student-to-student and student-to-teacher interactions. Furthermore, students do not internalize the programmed contents be-cause they are not motivated to use it. Therefore, computer does not fit to the instruction of traditional classroom and even regarded as an intruder in the teaching-learning processes in classrooms.
The classroom electronic network using local area network system provides an powerful means in enhancing the human-computer interaction. In addition, the classroom network encourages and motivates students to keep studying outside the class with electronic on-line workstation.
Integration of electronic computer network technology into the normal flow of a class will result in improved efficiency of teaching-learning processes of conventional classrooms.
