The purpose of this study was to analyze young children's experiences in agovernment-funded educational support program in G-city from the perspective of
General Comment to implementing children's rights in the early childhood of the UN
Children's Rights Committee. The participants of this study were 6 children and the
observation was conducted twice a week, for a total of 24 sessions for 90 minutes a
day from June 24th to October 4th in 2010. The results of this study were as follows:
Young children wanted to be respected just as they were, but they were not
guaranteed this; the teacher ignored their feelings and discriminated against them
rather than having their best interests at heart. They had a right to express their views
freely in all the matters that related to their best interests. However, their rights were
not respected when it came to reflecting their views and demands in educational
activities. Also, the service was preferentially provided as a matter of convenience
instead of the main agent of education cooperation, and children could not connect
their experiences between the education in kindergarten and the education provided by
the program. Also, it appeared that the children showed off what they had done in
class and discriminated against their peers to release their negative prejudices.
Therefore, although the program was supposed to respect the children's rights and
welfare, it did not seem to fully reflect the children's authority.
