이 연구의 주된 목적은 한국 중년기 성인 남녀의 성공, 실패, 미래성취의식에 대해 분석하는데 있다. 이를 위해 총 1,666명의 중년기 성인 남녀가 표집되었다. 아내 833명(전업주부 404명, 취업주부 421명, 무응답 8명)과 그들의 남편 833명(전업주부 남편 404명, 취업주부 남편 421명, 무응답)이었다. 연구자에 의해 제작된 개방형 질문지를 사용하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자랑스러운 성공경험으로 전업주부는 화목한 가정생활이, 남편은 원만한 인간관계 및 직업이, 취업주부는 원만한 인간관계, 화목한 가정생활, 직업의 순서로 중요하였다. 둘째, 성공의 가장 중요한 원인으로서, 아내와 남편 모두 자기조절이 가장 중요하고 그 다음으로 가정환경이 중요하였으나, 전업주부가 가정환경을 더욱 중요시했다. 셋째, 고통스러운 실패경험에 대해 아내는 자기조절 결여, 없음, 학업 실패, 경제적 어려움을, 남편은 자기조절 결여, 직업실패, 없음, 경제적 어려움의 순서로 반응함으로써, 남편이 아내에 비해 직업실패로 인한 고통이 컸다. 전업주부는 취업주부에 비해 없다는 반응이 가장 많았으나, 취업주부와 남편은 자기조절 결여를 가장 많이 지적하였다. 넷째 실패의 중요한 원인으로 아내는 자기조절 결여, 없음, 성격 문제, 가정환경의 순서로, 남편은 자기조절 결여, 없음, 인간관계, 성격문제, 능력부족의 순서로 응답하였다. 그러므로 아내는 남편보다 가정환경을, 남편은 아내보다 인간관계를 더 중요하게 여기는 차이가 있었다. 다섯째, 미래에 가장 성취하고 싶은 일로, 전업주부는 행복한 가정생활, 여유있는 생활이었고, 취업주부는 행복한 가정생활, 여유있는 생활, 성공적인 직장생활이었으며, 남편은 행복한 가정생활, 성공적인 직장생활, 여유있는 생활의 순서였다. 따라서 모두 행복한 가정생활을 미래에 가장 원하지만, 남편이 아내보다 성공적인 직장생활에 대한 희망이 더 컸다. 여섯째, 미래성취를 위해 가장 중요한 요인은 네 집단 모두 자기조절이 가장 중요하였으나, 그 다음으로 전업주부는 가정환경이, 취업주부와 남편집단은 경제적 안정이 중요한 차이가 있었다. 일곱째, 아내와 남편을 짝 지워 부부별로 분석한 결과, 부부는 성공, 실패, 미래성취의식에서 유사성이 있었다.

"The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of success, failure and future aspiration among middle-aged men and women. A total of 1,666 respondents, consisting of 833 women (housewives=404, working women=421, no response=8) and their spouse (n=833) completed an open-ended questionnaire developed by the first two authors. The results are as follows. First, as for the most proud achievement, housewives listed harmonious family, husbands listed harmonious interpersonal relations and working women listed harmonious interpersonal relations, followed by harmonious family and occupation. Second, as for the most important reason for their success, both men and women listed self-regulation, followed by family environment. with housewives reporting family environment to a greater degree. Third, as for the most painful failure experience, women listed failure to self-regulate, none, academic failure and financial difficulties, and men listed failure to self-regulate, failure at work, none and financial difficulties. More men listed failure at work than women. Working women were more likely to list “none” than housewives, but they were more likely to list failure to self-regulate, similar to men. Fourth, as for the most important reason for failure, women listed failure to self-regulate, none, personality problem, family environment, and men listed failure to self-regulate, none, interpersonal relations, personality problem, and a lack
of ability. Thus, women were more likely than men to attribute family environment and men were more likely than women to attribute interpersonal relations as the reason for their failure. Fifth, as for future aspiration, housewives listed harmonious family, followed by comfortable life, and working women listed harmonious family,
followed by comfortable life, and successful career. Men listed harmonious family, followed successful career, and comfortable life. All three groups listed harmonious family as the important reason, but more men are likely to list successful career than women. Sixth, as for the most important reason for achieving future aspiration, all three groups listed self-regulation, followed by family environment for housewives, and financial security for working women and men. Seventh, when husbands and wives were matched and compared, there were similarities in their responses in relation to perception of success, failure and future aspiration.
