The Shishimai(lion dance) of Japan flowed in with the Buddhism in about the sixth century and started from Gigaku(伎楽) of the buddhist temple. It is the folk performing arts that appear in various local festivals and are done most widely today. The lion dance is generally consist of one lion that is played by two performers. However, various shishimais will arise at posterity. shishimai composed of one person, three person or three people or more, etc. Moreover there is called Shishimai that the dance of the deer, the wild boar, the dragon, and the Kirin. Especially one performer-Shishimai becomes a pattern and it is distributed a lot.
This study is focused on the background to which different point and Shishimai by two performers and one performer. There was an emphasis in existence as symbol of the authority at first. It was pointed out that one performer Shishimai had developed a dramatic content and composed being added and depending especially.
It is seen changing process that is neither Shishimai by two performers nor a Shishimai by one performer from one performer. It is possible to see from Shishimai named Gongenmai(権現舞) of incarnate in lion dance and Isedaikagura (伊勢太神楽) that Shinto music and dancing of Ise shrine as an example.
The philosophical backgrounds of Japanese Shishimai can be confirmed through Gongenmai and Isedaikagura which is widely distributed in Japan.
And the Shishimai is a concrete symbol of the process to which the Buddhism takes hold in general in Japan.
The Gongen concept is the cornerstone of the Honji Suijaku(本地垂迹) idea, according to which Indian Buddhist deities choose to appear to the Japanese as native Kami(神) in order to save mankind. And the Shishimai has diffused instead of the visit to a shrine of Ise Jingu Shrine(伊勢神宮).
The Shishimai is Gongen of god's temporary appearance, and the representation act of the visit to a shrine. It can be seen the theatrical attribute (acting and transformation) as the prototype of play.
