This study investigated the contents of the U.S. found in South and North Korean history textbooks. Historically, the U.S. has been closely related to the Korean peninsula. The superpower is more closely interrelated than ever before because South and North Korea are
very important geopolitically. With that in mind, South and North Korean secondary
history textbooks were analyzed in terms of such major events as USS General Sherman
Incident, The 1871 U.S. Occupation of Ganghwa Island, The Unyo Incident and the Treaty
of Ganghwa Island, The Korean-American Treaty in 1882, The Taft-Katsura Agreement of
July 1905, and The March First Movement of 1919. First, the North Korean history
textbooks magnify events related to America. Secondly, historical fabrications are found in
the descriptions of some incidents in North Korean textbooks. Thirdly, compared to the
earlier study conducted by Kim (1993), new editions of North Korean history textbooks
show less aggressive and ideological depictions of the U.S. than old editions. Unlike North
Korean history textbooks, South Korean history textbooks approach the U.S. in a more
systematic way rather than an ideological way. For example, Korean history textbooks deal
with many aspects such as politics, economy, and society in order to understand Korean
history comprehensively.
