The role of Chinese literati was to interpret omens, the indirect manifestation of God's will and to inscribe these into texts. To understand and explain the relationship between the Heaven and human society is literati's cultural responsibility. Based on this cultural ground, Liu Xie in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragon understood astronomy and geography as two patterns which represent the will of Heaven. Man observes and records the pattern of Heaven. Scribers and literati in ancient China played the role. The nature of writing in ancient China was to inscribe pattern representing the God's will.
