21.1: Occurrence of metals
-mineral: naturally occurring substance with a range of chemical composition
-ore: a mineral deposit concentrated enough to allow economical recovery of a desired metal
21.2: Metallurgical Processes
-Metallurgy: science and technology of separating metals from their ores and compounding alloys
-alloy: solid solution either of two or more metals, or of a metal or metals with one or more nonmetals
-three principal steps in the recovery of metal:
(1) preparation of the ore -> (2) production of the metal -> (3) purification of the metal
-Ferromagnetic metals: strongly attracted to magnets
-amalgam: alloy of mercury with another metal or metals
-pyrometallurgy: procedures carried out at high temperatures
-production of the metal 에는 chemical reduction, electrolytic reduction 등이 있음
-Purification of metals 에는 Distillation, Electrolysis, Zone refining 등이 있음.
