Coca Cola originated in 1886 by a man by the name of John Pemberton John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta who prepared a fragrant caramel colored liquid out of curiosity. He took his product to Jacob’s Pharmacy, where he combined his mixture with carbonated water and thus Coca Cola was born. Customers went insane over the new co concoction that he created and the drink was flying out of the fountain for five cents per glass. (Coca Cola Company, 2007)
Frank Robinson, who was Pemberton’s bookkeeper, came up with the name for the drink. He based the name off of a calligraphic style, which he thought represented this new an innovative drink. Permberton was only able to produce nine glasses of the drink a day in his first year of production. . In 1888, Pemberton died and the rights for the business were transferred to Atlanta businessman Asa Griggs Candler. He became the first President of the company and gave vision and business to the brand. Candler was a smart businessman and introduced Coca Cola to the masses with innovative marketing approaches.
In 1894, a Mississippi businessman named Joseph Biedenharn bottled Coca cola for the first time, but did not receive a positive response from Candler. By 1895, Candler established syrup plants in Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles. In 1899, two Chattanooga lawyers, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead, secured exclusive rights from Candler to bottle and sell the beverage for just one dollar. (Coca Cola Company, 2007)
