1. Coordination of parts of clauses.
Coordination can be used to link parts of clauses (e.g. subjects, verb phrases, objects) rather than whole clauses. Theses can often be seen as cases of clause coordination in which repeated parts are omitted. For example, this sentence
(1) Her mother needed a chat and some moral support.
can be expanded as
(2) Her mother needed a chat and her mother needed some moral support.
But in other cases we cannot reconstruct two complete clauses:
(3) My closest friends are Peter and his wife.
This does not mean:
(4) My closest friend is Peter and my closest friend is his wife.
In addition, there are cases of coordination by and which may indicate a `reciprocal` relationship:
(5)By the time the frist crackling of spring came around, John and I were hopelessly in love. (`John was in love with me and I was in love with Joan.`)
(6) Las night our dog and the neighbour`s were having a fight. (`Our dog and the neighbour`s were having a fight with each other.`)
