남명의 생애와 발자취에 대한 관심은 상당히 오래 되었다. 어찌 보면 남명 당대에도 이에 대한 관심이 있었고, 남명이 돌아간 직후 이에 대한 정리가 본격화되었다고 할 것이다. 하지만 남명의 생애 가운데 예민한 부분이 있기도 하고, 제자 정인홍의 정치적 부침에 따른 후유증으로 생애에 관한 자료도 여러 차례 여러 사람에 의해 중복하여 지어지기도 하였다. 따라서 남명에 대한 생애자료는 그 누구보다도 많이 남게 되었다.
근대에 들어 남명의 생애를 정리하여 소개하는 일에 그리 적극적이지 못하였다. 근대의 인명사서 등에 남명에 대한 내용은 비슷한 시기의 인물들에 비해 상대적으로 소략한 감이 있다. 1990년대 초에 남명에 대한 관심이 높아지며 남명의 생애에 대해서도 관심을 보이기도 하였으나, 본격적인 연구와 번역, 교정 등은 이루어지 않았다. 다만 최근 들어 다행스럽게 남명에 관한 생애자료가 다시 전반적으로 검토되고 정리되고 있다.
남명의 생애에 관한 정리와 소개, 교정과 연구는 논문, 저서, 소설, 사전, 교과서 및 개설서 등 여러 형태로 이루어졌다. 이 가운데 소설로 지어지고 교과서 및 개설서에 소개되는 것은 그다지 많지 않으나, 논문, 저서 등의 형태로 점점 깊이 있게 연구가 진행되고 있으며, 인터넷 온라인상에 사전적 설명 등이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 남명의 생애에 대한 철저한 실증을 바탕으로 생애가 정확하게 소개되어야 할 것이다.
남명의 발자취에 관한 정리와 소개는 주로 책으로 몇 권 나와 있는데, 개설적으로 간략히 설명한 것에서부터 특정한 분야 예컨대 한시 등과 관련하여 발자취를 탐방하는 형식으로 된 것도 있다. 그리고 그의 생애의 발자취와 학문적 궤적을 관련지어 연구한 것도 있다. 이들 발자취에 대한 정리와 탐구는 이전의 유적지에 대해 소략하게 소개한 책자가 갖는 한계를 극복하였다고 할 것이다. 하지만, 아직도 발굴하거나 정리가 되지 않은 발자취에 대한 심도 있는 연구가 필요한 실정이다.

영어 초록

Researches about Nammyung’s life and his footsteps have been changed enormously since Nammyung study Research Center was founded 20 years ago.
As for his life, in the beginning there were researches only about informing his career, character and studying, however, now days researches have been carried out to highly specific fields. On previous days there were only few books alluded his words, but now plenty of the books that are totally about him were published. There are the books about his life concisely and specifically, and there are the books for elementary school students, adults and researchers, and there are the books in which his life was restructured interestingly.
Compare to the researches about his life, the researches about his footsteps are fewer. In this thesis there are few researches about Duck-chen lecture hall and the few places Nammyung visited, but most of them are only introducing his footsteps briefly. Here, this thesis will introduce many of remains related to Nammyung like Duck-chen lecture hall, Shan-chen Jae, Nammyung’s graveyard, Shan-Hae bower, Shin-Shan lecture hall, Gye-bu bower, Nue-ryong bower and so on.
Nammyung Study Research Center printed a booklet introducing Nammyung’s life and his remains for publics. This booklet has been printed from the beginning, but it has a minor defect that contains too little information. After 2000, we published a few booklets introducing Nammyung’s remains which was written after researching Nammyung’s footsteps scattered in Gyungnam area, and these booklets not only help people understand his life and activities, but also deepen the comprehension about his poetry.
These research reports and books are the proofs noticing how the research of Nammyung has advanced. Despite of these proofs I reckon we should release more books about Nammyung’s life. For example, we could film his life as a TV drama, since Korean dramas’ power has been getting bigger and bigger through Korean wave. Happening at Dan-sheng So and seclusion on Ji-ri mountain show that Nammyung was not a normal person that his life was a lot more dramatical than any other historical people. Few weeks ago Korean TV show, History Special, broadcasting his life is a supporting evidence.
Moreover, to inform and study his life, we should have examined the materials about his life in advance, nevertheless there was no full-scale research of that. Fortunately, Nammyung Study Research Center recently published planty of books by arranging and translating his lifetime materials. The accurate translation and the elaborate correction of the materials can contribute remarkably to understand his life firmly.
Yet, merely translating his lifetime materials would be not enough to understand his life properly. We found a few mistakes in old day’s materials so that we need to investigate these materials closely one by one. The reason we plan to hold serial seminars about these materials is because of this.
I hope that his life could construct clearly without any controversy, and through this work I hope we could introduce the great life of Nammyung completely to young students, and also to grown-ups.
