한국어 초록

21세기 정보기술기반 사회로 진입한 최근 십여 년 사이 한국의 현대미술지형은 획기적으로 변화해왔다. 미술시장의 경기호황, 국제교류전의 증가, 지역문화예술사업의 확산, 정부의 예술지원정책확대 등 새로운 사회 환경과 지원확대는 많은 신진작가들의 작업의욕을 고취시키고 전시활동을 촉진시키는 창작환경을 조성하고 있다. 90년대 말부터 들어서기 시작한 대안공간들과 지역의 폐교, 도심의 산업시설 등 다양한 유휴 공간들을 활용한 창작스튜디오들이 전국적으로 조성되면서 젊은 신진작가들의 창작, 전시, 사회적 참여기회를 확대하고 있다. 동시에 이러한 공간들을 효율적으로 운영하고 예술가들의 창작과 전시활동을 지원할 수 있는 다양한 제도가 마련되고 문화적인 인프라가 구축되면서 한국작가들의 창작기반이 다져지고 국제적인 경쟁력이 강화되고있다(이동연, 김상우, 민병직, 2007).

영어 초록

Recent views in the field of cognitive science highlight the sociocultural
influence on human development. In order to explore the meaning of talent in the
visual arts perceived in the contemporary Korean sociocultural context, this paper
first examines the perceptions of artistic talent of secondary art teachers and art
professionals who support the practice of artists in diverse art institutions. Then it
compares the perceptions of educators to those of art professionals. This is
followed by a discussion of the educational implications.
The result of the perception comparison between art teachers and art
professionals reveals that the biggest difference is in the scope of what
characterizes artistic talent. Whereas art teachers tend to perceive artistic talent as
being limited to the personal ability to develop one’s visual expression, art
professionals consider it as the social ability to find one’s own way to establish a
personally significant position in the art world.
This implies that there are different sociocultural influences in the domains of
education and art. The limited perception of art teachers implies that the current
education system cannot effectively support the artistic talent that students are
developing through a wide range of intellectual explorations in diverse social
contexts. This paper’s exploration of the meaning of talent in the visual arts
perceived in the Korean sociocultural context today constitutes a meaningful effort
to extend educators’ views on talent in the visual arts.
