본문내용
In the mid-80s, the news about the love and the marriage of a French man and a Chinese woman staggered the world. After the 20 years of marriage, it turned out that the wife was actually a Chinese male spy disguised as a woman, and the husband claimed that he didn’t know his wife’s real gender (Wadler). People wondered why the husband couldn’t distinguish his wife’s gender and made a lot of assumptions about it. Based on this story, David Henry Hwang wrote a play called M. Butterfly. The writer attributed the reason for the husband Bernard Boursicot’s misperception of his wife’s gender to his fantasy of the Oriental woman and wanted to criticize the Orientalist view (Baek 5). But did Hwang truly succeed in drawing attention to the stereotypes of the Orientalism and making audience aware of it? Or did he fail to get his meaning over to the audience, such that the play, in unintended irony, reinforces those stereotypes to its audience?
