Applying a proper language is significant in current society. People share their meanings through their languages; however, it is important to use appropriate and polite languages to prevent hurting other’s feeling when expressing your idea. Therefore, people use linguistic politeness in communicating. In Korea, there is a very special linguistic form to represent the politeness, an ‘indirect language’. Koreans tend to speak indirectly when they present their thoughts, or even in case of request and reject.
This paper covers different cases that reveal the ‘language indirectness’ in Korea, and indicates various literature studies on this topic. Through various researches and survey, the paper expects to demonstrate the role of language indirectness applied in Korean linguistics, while observing whether language indirectness in Korea comes from the cultural background and is it necessary to reflect as the positive influence of linguistic politeness.
