The Simple Way to Make a More Humane Society
When I was in elementary school, there was a program named “Open Your Eyes” in Korea. This program connected organ donors to people who cannot see by nature or get an acquired blindness because of accidents or diseases, so they were donated corneas by donors and got new eyesight. It was shocking for me. The fact that a person who had a disability all his life could see a bright world by being donated only one cornea of a dead person was a pleasant but pitiful thing to me. It’s pleasant because the more people promise to donate organs, the more people who have disabilities get new lives and hopes, but it’s pitiful because the more people do not donate their organs, the more people lose opportunities to make their lives more abundant. Thus, organ donation benefits our society by helping us deal with our bodies carefully, improving love from person to person, and making us be considerate to people who suffer from diseases.
