Antiviral Agents Introduction
The pace of the discovery of clinically useful antiviral drugs has become markedly accelerated, in contrats to the slow progress made at the veginning of the search. It is not so long since the possibility of finding such agents seemed remote of even nonexistent. The arguments then mobilized were mainly that viruses were so closely associated with the host cell that there seemed no possibility of destroying one with out the other. Today, however, it has become accepted that antiviral chemotherapy is essentially like anti-bacterial chemotheraty. Moreover, the progress was being made in a different field, the handling of viruses in the laboratory.
