In "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" (1939), Clement Greenberg defines two cultures occurred sequentially in one of civilization, the Avant-Garde and Kitsch as `high culture (or genuine culture)` and `low culture (or popular culture) ` respectively. While observing how these two cultures emerged in the historical and social background, he analyzes why the educated and true culture, Avant-Garde was alienated from the masses and how kitsch, which is anesthetic to the value of the genuine culture, got popular under absolutism.

In "Avant-Garde and Kitsch"(1939),
