‘Je-Sa’ performed on Chu-suk in Korea
Chu-suk is one of the biggest holidays in Korea. It is on the 15th of August by lunar calendar. People have the full moon on that day, and old people in Korea thought that it was the biggest moon of the year. In the old days when there were no artificial light, people could not see any things; people could not perspective the approach of the enemies or wild beasts. The darkness is the fear to ancient people. However, people could see anything under the full moon, and people thanked the full moon. People naturally had the festival under the full moon. Among the full moons, people had the biggest festival of the year on Chu-suk when they had the biggest full moon. Chu-suk has another meaning to ancient Korean people. People planted the filed on spring, and they harvested on autumn. There was nothing to eat except the grains, and there were no imports or exports in Korea. Therefore, the harvest was very important thing to them. People had abundant foods on autumn, so they celebrated their harvest and prayed to God for next year’s farming. On Chu-Shuk, all the members of one family gathered in grand-father’s house or the eldest son’s house.
