1. Overview of General Motors and its Global Environment

General Motors’s primary focus is development, production and marketing of cars, trucks and parts. Due to its enormous size as a global corporation, GM has divided itself into four segments based on regions. The regional segments are GM North America (GMNA), GM Europe (GME), GM Latin America/Africa/Mid-East (GMLAAM) and GM Asia Pacific (GMAP). Within the 4 regional segments, GM sells the following brands; Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, GMC, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall.
Along with the automotive operations, GM also operates GMAC LLC (GMAC) for finance and insurance operations. GMAC provides many forms of financial services, including consumer vehicle financing, automotive dealership and other commercial financing, residential mortgage services, automobile service contracts, personal automobile insurance coverage and selected commercial insurance coverage. The creation of GMAC made GM more affordable to the average consumer by offering low interest loans.
The historical high for GM’s stock was $93.63 on the 28th of April 2000. With the economy is in a recession and GM current financial state, GM reached $1.27 in the recent 52 weeks low. This is a historic time because not only one country is suffering but the entire world is. Stock indices around the world saw drastic drop in value. Oil prices went from the high of $4.59 per gallon average of last June to under $2.00 per gallon in recent months.
