Part 1.
Prince Hamlet in William Shakespeare’s one of the best known plays, Hamlet; Prince of Denmark, is a very enigmatic character. He displays many contrasting characteristics within himself. He is contemplative but impulsive, tender but fierce, and polite but rude. These traits in Hamlet show the uncertainty of a troubled human mind and further highlight the fatal consequence of it.
The most obvious trait he exposes throughout the play is his cautiousness and impulsiveness. Even though he is almost assured, after meeting the ghost, that Claudius has murdered King Hamlet, he hesitates to carry out the revenge and postpones it throughout the play. He wants to verify that the ghost he saw was not a devil to trick him and that Claudius has indeed committed the crime before he makes his move. However, even after he knows the truth, he does not kill Claudius at once.
“A villain kills my father, and for that,
I his sole son do this same villain send
To heaven.” (Act 3 Scene 3, 76-78)
Even though Hamlet has a reason to not carry out his act immediately, at this point, it seems like a mere excuse. It seems that Hamlet is a reasonable man who seeks justice rather than revenge but forces himself to believe that he has to avenge his father’s death. However, surprisingly, he sometimes acts rashly. For instance, he kills Polonius who was hiding behind the arras without thinking twice. It is ironic that he stabs someone without even checking who he is because up until that point, he was obsessed with proving Claudius’ guilt and was waiting for the perfect moment for revenge.
