In Both Seamus Heaney’s “Punishment,” and Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus” the women appear as the objectified beings; however, the effect they produce shapes a contrast with each other, and this gap is based on fundamental difference of the perspective.
In “Punishment” Heaney describes the dead body of a female in detail, which evokes a sense of wretchedness and sympathy towards the victim. However, this gaze of Heaney seems to contain a serious problem; from the beginning of the poem, he mainly describes on the “naked front” of the body such as “nape,” “nipples,” and “ribs,” which well may arouse a sensual feeling....
