Every country has its own customs. There are particular customs surrounding funeral and memorial services in Korea too. The funeral and memorial service are very different other countries about the methods, procedures and concepts. JanRye is a funeral service, and JeSa is a memorial service in Korea. According to the encyclopedia, JangRye is a ceremony, usually religious, for burying or burning a dead person; JeSa is an ancestor-worship ceremony and propitiate the souls of ancestors. What are the differences between Korean practices and the American? There are so many differences about people’s thinking, the methods and the procedures for the funeral and memorial services. There are differences between the meanings, concepts, and procedures of the funeral and memorial services in Korea and in United States, and then, I define the meaning of JeSa and JangRye in Korea.
