Department stores are one of other competitive distribution, often preferred by high-class consumers. Costing as double price as normal products, luxury brands sold in department stores generally consist of expensive overseas brands from Europe or the United States. An apparent trend is Japanese brands’ success in Korean cosmetics market although the whole amount of importing cosmetic products has been falling down for recent three years. According to Korean Cosmetics Association’s 2004 report, the whole amount of import decreased from $520,910,000 in 2002 to $499,190,000 in 2003, and $485,870,000 in 2004, rating each 4.2% and 2.7%. On the contrary, that of Japanese cosmetics increased from $68,900,000 in 2002 to $72,650,000 in 2003, and to $86,526,000, at the rate of 5.4% and 19.1%. The high popularity of Japanese brands origins from consumers’ spread notion that Japanese products are better than western products for Asian women’s skin.
