The conventional view suggests that a proficient interpreter's role should be transparent, invisible, and passive (Mason & Ren, 2012, p233). However, let us look at the example of doctors and patients in Western culture. doctors, of course, have more medical knowledge and power than immigrant patients. It will be difficult for interpreters to stick to the traditionally required role. Moreover, according to Kaufert and Putsch (1997, p.72), the work of interpreter is further complicated by the unequal distribution of power in the relationship between the parties involved. For better medical treatment, as patients is anxious about their body, the interpreter is expected to intervene actively rather than keeping the conduit of traditional interpreters in these situations.
In this regard, this paper will focus on how power relationships can play an essential role in determining communication outcomes and how interpreters address communication problems in medical settings.
