본문내용
Phonetics is concerned with describing speech.
Making speech gestures audible involves pushing air out of the lungs while producing a noise in the throat or mouth. These basic noises are changed by the actions of the tongue and lips.
The actions of the tongue are among the fastest and precise physical movements that people can make.
SPEECH PRODUCTION
When you talk, the process is like this.
Air from the lungs goes up through the trachea -> arrive at the larynx; here the air should pass two small muscular folds called the vocal folds -> two circumstances may occur; 1) the vocal folds are apart (same as when we are breathing, open glottis) -> relatively free to move into the pharynx and mouth. -> VOICELESS 2) the vocal folds are adjusted (have a narrow passage between them, narrow glottis) -> vibration occurs -> VOICED
Ex) f/v, fat/vat, thigh/thy, sue/zoo (we refer them as minimal pairs)
