Multiprocessor system is a scheduling system which uses multiple CPU cores instead of one CPU. Use of multiple CPU along with threads which enable the applications to run in parallel has a strong advantage to run faster than when using a single CPU. These days, multiprocessor system is commonly applied in desktop, laptops, and mobile devices.
Since there is more than one CPU running, you need an efficient multiprocessor scheduling. To understand the multiprocessor scheduling, you have to understand the background of multiprocessor architecture. When using a single CPU, there is a hierarchy of hardware caches. Caches are small, fast memories that hold copies of popular, frequently used data from the main memory of the system while the main memory holds the all of the data. Using cache helps the processor run programs faster because once the data from a certain program is stored in cache, the processor doesn’t have to go through all of the data from the main memory to run that program. There are two ways for processor to store data in cache: temporal locality and spatial locality.
