2. Objective
(1) To learn about liquid-liquid extraction and to understand the purpose of apparatus
(2) We proceed with the liquid-liquid extraction experiment changing the stroke and flow conditions. The purpose of the experiment is to draw a graph of the concentration of solutes in the light and heavy solutions obtained from the experiment, and to find out how the conditions affect the extraction.
3. Result
We can change the unit of flow rate (ml/s) to (ml/min) by multiplying 60.
4. Discussion
A. Analysis of lighter liquid with refractometer
(1) Concentration of acetic acid in lighter liquid with varying flow rate and stroke condition
I measured the refractive index of 2wt% acetic acid/benzene solution and pure benzene. I got the trend line by plotting the graph for refractive index vs concentration of acetic acid.
2wt% acetic acid + Benzene (acetic acid 2%): 1.4991, Pure benzene (acetic acid 0%): 1.5020
