Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is a short fiction literature with clear expression of the person’s complicated self-discovery. This short story contains the change in Mrs. Mallard’s mind happening after the news of her husbands’ death. Mrs. Mallard’s initial feelings of depression are replaced by freedom and joy. An hour later, her husband returns home and Mrs. Mallard dies suddenly from “joy that kills”.
Theme and characters are considered as the most important literary devices in this fiction. The most prevalent theme in “The Story of an Hour” is the conflict between freedom and repression.
