1. a) What did Darwin mean by the “abominable mystery”?
Darwin was apparently baffled by what he thought was the rapid diversification and evolution of angiosperms / flowering plants
b) Provide one explanation, backed up with evidence, that could help resolve the “abominable mystery”.
Several possible answers
1) Evidence that dramatic increases in the numbers of both insects and flowering plants have been determined from the fossil record. These increases coincide suggesting that the increase in diversity is linked in some way. Insect pollination appears ancestral in flowering plants and there are many adaptations between plants and insects that suggest these organisms coevolved.
Or
2) Amborella is a sister species to all other extant angiosperms. The Amborella genome, sequenced in 2013, indicates that the ancestral angiosperm was polyploid and an ancient whole genome duplication predated angiosperm diversification.
