The author starts off by saying that presenting us an interesting story about Guilhem de Rodes. This mysterious-like story is presented probably to state the difference between history and past and how it is like to study history. Contrary to the myth, what historians present us cannot show us every detail of the past and not the truth itself. Past always has gaps and problems. There are some missing information in the existing material and sometimes some parts of evidence do not even exist. Therefore, historians should collect all the possible evidence and interpret them by ... .. Now I clearly know from this book that history is a process of argumentation. Although history has to be strictly based on the sources and seek truth, history itself can never be the absolute truth because of both internal and external reasons I believe. Internal reason lies in the characteristic of sources that they are full of gaps.
