1. OBJECTIVE
- To appreciate the head loss and the factors affect to the head lossin the fluid system.
- To determine the head loss in a bore pipe related to the flow rate, wall friction, etc.
- To determine the head loss related to pipe fittings (45o elbow, 90oelbow, Tee, water meters, sudden expansion and sudden enlargement, etc), valves (glove and gate valve), flow measuring device (orifice and venturi).
- To determinethe correlation between friction coefficient and Reynolds number for flow of water through a pipe.
2. THEORY
What is head loss?
Head loss is a measure of the reduction in the total head (sum of elevation head, velocity head and pressure head) of the fluid as it moves through a fluid system.
Head loss is caused by the friction between the fluid and the walls of the pipe; the friction between adjacent fluid particles as they move relative to one another; the turbulence caused by various reasons such as pipingentrances and exits, pumps, valves, flow reducers, and fittings.
