센서의 역할은 크게 두 가지로 나뉘는데, 인간의 오감을 대신하여 정보의 수집 및 변환을 수행하는 역할과 인간의 오감의 한계로 인해 검출 및 측정 불가하거나 불편한 대상물의 정보를 수집 및 변환하는 역할을 수행한다. 전자의 경우, 시각은 광센서, 청각은 음향 및 음성인식 센서, 후각과 미각은 화학센서(chemical sensor), 촉각은 압력 및 온도 센서 등이 대표적이다. 후자의 경우, 오감에 대응하는 상기 센서들의 측정 범위, 내구성, 민감도(sensitivity) 등 센서의 기능을 향상시키거나 (예. 무색, 무취의 가스 검출, 고온 측정), 자기장(magnetic field)이나 혈당처럼 오감으로는 감지 불가한 대상물을 측정하는 센서를 말한다.센서 시장의 성장은 제조업의 발달과 궤를 같이 하는데, 1970~80년대에 제조업이 자동화 시스템을 도입하여 첨단화 되면서 비약적인 발전을 하게 된다. 이런 과정에서 생산성 향상 및 근로환경 개선의 필요성이 대두되기 시작했고 센서가 산업으로서 개화하기 시작했다. 이런 센서 산업의 발전 정도는 공장 자동화의 선진도를 가름하는 척도가 되며, 과거 FA(factory Automation)가 중심이던 센서 산업은 1990년대 들어 디지털 기술의 급성장 및 보편화와 더불어 환경, 자동차, 우주 항공, 군수 등의 분야에서 사용자의 니즈(needs)가 증가하면서 꾸준히 그 영역을 확장해 왔다. 그리고 2000년대 들어 기술과 감성이 접목된 감성공학에 의한 기능(제품)들이 고부가가치화 되면서 그 핵심 부품인 센서의 수요가 증가하고 있다. 특히 사용자의 니즈가 다양해지면서 단순히 기술에 의한 기능을 제공받는데서 벗어나, 인간-기계간의 인터페이스(interface) 분야에서 새로운 센서 기술을 요구하고 있다.
