A friend is not a hooker. An ideal friend is someone who is honest, loyal and ready and place of your choosing.
I sometimes feel that I am in a contractual relationship just by having dinner with a friend. Even before my friend and I decide when or where to meet, I know that this will entail a long and burdensome process. I need to wear my clothes for the occasion, and prepare interesting subjects to talk about which will interest both sides. We meet at an agreed upon time at a place of our choosing, for which the true purpose is not to eat dinner.
The only reassurance which drives me on is the guaranteed pleasure I will have through the encounter. The pleasure involves the expectation that this meeting will be the best thing that will have happened this weekend. The pleasure package includes the stress and concerns of the previous week falling apart, knowing that the person in front of me is there to listen and understand my worries. I am not anxious about the extra bill that might have been caused by the bottle of wine as the occasion calls for it.
