본문내용
The most memorable writing in America was done by Founding Fathers in eighteenth century. They both admired and were active in the European “Age of Reason” or “Enlightenment. They shared the Enlightenment belief that human intelligence could understand both nature and man.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN shows the Enlightenment spirit in American in his writings, at its best and most optimistic. His style is quite modern and, even today; his works are a joy to read. Although he strongly disagreed with the opinions of Puritans, his works show a return to their “plain style.” He did not like poetry and felt that writing should always have a practical propose. Even in his earliest work the Dogood Papers, written when he was only sixteen, we can see these ideas. These are a set of short pieces which are very funny, but full of moral advice. His Poor Richard’s Almanac (1732-1757), gives similar advice. Almanacs were a popular form of practical literature. Together with the Bible and the newspaper, they were the sole reading matter in most Colonial households. In 1757, he collected together the best of his saying, making them into an essay called The Way to Wealth.
