In Hard Times, Charles Dickens’ criticism is directed primarily against the personal values and individual states of mind. I am going to show that through this novel Dickens underlines the restorative powers of sympathy and personal `understanding, also presents implicative conclusion suggesting that society may be improved through a moral alteration of personal behavior.
Generally, morality play is made to provide the audiences with moral realization by showing the track of individual’s life developing with group of characters who are personifications of either humanity or inhumanity. Hard Times as a morality play is significantly designed to educate and involves both strong moral intention behind it and passages of direct moralizing. Every character is an embodiment of certain idea, concept or principle like the dramatic personae. More importantly, as morality play often reflects the dominant belief of the time period, this novel also deals with industrialized and utilitarian social phenomena in Victorian era.
