Ch. 14 – Resource Issues
2 billion people live without clean water or sewers. 1 billion live in cities with unsafe sulfur dioxide levels.
Key Issue #1 – Why are resources being depleted?
Animate power – Power supplied by people or animals
Inanimate power – Power generated from machines.
Biomass – Fuel that derives from plant material or animal waste
Renewable energy – A source that has theoretically unlimited supply and is not depleted when used by humans
Nonrenewable energy – A source of energy that is a finite (limited) supply capable of being exhausted
Proven reserve – The amount of energy in deposits that have been discovered
Potential reserve – The amount of energy in deposits not yet identified but thought to exist
Ferrous metals – Metals, including iron ore, that are utilized in the production of iron and steel
Non ferrous metals – Metals usually to make products other than iron or steel, most used in making aluminum
Fossil fuel – Energy source formed from the residue of plants and animals buried millions of years ago
