본문내용
Korea has come a long way since its traditional period of time, and its modernity in today’s society has a lot to do with how it changed from traditional beliefs to modern ways. This paper seeks to explain and analyze its traditions in pre-modern history, between the 17th and the 19th centuries, from the late Choson dynasty period to the end of it. This paper will also take a look at how foreign influences between the 19th and the 20th centuries affected modern Korea, and lastly, will show its relation to the convergence and divergence of the historical process.
The social life of the Korean people changed radically in the 17th century and to explain this, there are three causes that took place at that time. The first was the natural development of Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. The influence of Confucianism had gradually grown since the fifth century. When Neo-Confucianism was introduced in the 14th century, it created a new following and gradually came to play a greater role in society and ideology. Another subtle but noticeable cause for the changes in society can be attributed to population pressures. Sometime in the 17th century, population rates reached a climax point where population density began to push the limits of the productivity of the land. Bad harvests meant starvation, and growth in population led to changes in inheritance and social practices. The final cause came from the underlying great concern over proper ritual in the late 17th century due to the fall of the Ming dynasty and its replacement with a non-Chinese, barbarian Manchu dynasty. Korea felt the impetus to become the standard-bearer of Confucianism in the world.
