The aim of this study is to investigate how Korean learner perceive and produce Japanese speech sounds, and the effect of variable auditory inputs and monitoring on the production of target sounds.Although production seems to be the main focus of most L2 practitioners in their efforts to minimize the degree of foreign accent in their student’s L2 pronunciation, the possibility that perception may play an important role in foreign accent has received serious consideration, as suggested by the number of studies that have attempted to assess the role of auditory training using synthesized sounds in the teaching of pronunciation (Williams 1979; Jamieson and Morosan 1986; Hwang 2002; Han 2002). Also, The influence of L1 on the perception of L2 sounds has been documented and explanations for the observed mispronunciations have been proposed by linguists of different theoretical persuasions (Weinreich 1953; Eckman 1977). Further, there exist several studies to investigate the mechanism between perception and production of the speech sounds (Lieberman & Mattingly, 1985, Fowler, 1986, Kelso et al., 1986). However, such explanations have remained unsatisfactory and the focus was mainly on the language itself.
