Many critics and readers (including some of my classmates in this course) criticize the main female character, Edna, for being “selfish”. They argue that Edna neglects her duty and responsibility as a wife and as well as a mother. Some people even say that she is not just selfish, but a bad mother and a bad wife. Then, let’s look through some parts of the novel that the critics and readers pointed out as Edna’s selfish behavior in order to decide whether she is really selfish or not.
First, she is not a typical good wife of those times. “Good wife” in this context means a wife who completely and willingly obeys and follows her husband’s opinion and supports him in various ways, exactly like Adele Ratignolle in this novel. Unlike Madame Ratignolle, Edna cancels her Tuesday reception which can affect her husband’s business and moves to small house while her husband is on a business trip even without a single discussion with him. In addition, she is not a typical “motherly mother” either. Edna says that she can’t live only for her children, and when old Madame Pontellier took the children with her she felt freedom and relief.
