1.1 Nachos - background / history / checklist
The Nachos stands for Not Another Completely Heuristic Operating System and it is an educative software which permits students to analyze, modify and implement operating system. It was first used at the University of California, Berkeley, and was developed by Tom Anderson.
The goal was to provide a project environment that is realistic enough to show how real Operating Systems work, yet simple enough that students can understand and modify it in significant ways.
It has an excellent balance between simplicity and realism. It runs as a UNIX process instead of directly on bare hardware so it is also easier for students to do experiments since they don’t need to change between development environment and Nachos.
The Nachos is the simplest implementation which shows the operation of each component of an Operating System. It gives assignments to students to write significant portions of each of the major piece of a modern Operating System. It is used by many schools to teach their operating system courses.
