이 논문은 관음신앙에 대한 천태의 선적 이해를 분석해 정리한 것이다. 동북아 불교신앙의 중요한 형태 중의 하나인 관음신앙은 중국인들에 의해 다양하게 수용되었다. 외재적이며 초월적 존재로 대중적 지지를 받았으며, 중국에 토착화하여 낭랑신앙이나 해신신앙으로 자리잡기도 했다. 그러나 천 태지의는 이러한 종교적 관념에 동의하지 않았다. 관음을 수행적으로 이해 하고자 했다.
관음을 천태신앙의 독특한 수행방식인 관법으로 이해하고자 한 것은 법 화경에 대한 그의 주석인 법화문구이며, 이 책의 ｢석관세음보살보문품｣ 에서 십쌍과 오척으로 관음보살을 해석하면서 특유의 관법에 의거한 관음보 살의 해석이 등장한다. 이들 중에서 본 논문은 오척을 중심으로 관법에 의 거한 관음보살의 해석을 분석해 정리하고자 한다.
｢석관세음보살보문품｣의 오척에선 관세음이란 단어를 축자적으로 한 글자 씩 해석하고 있으며, 이 경우 관이란 글자를 관법에 의거해 이해하고자 한 다. 즉, 석관(析觀), 체관(體觀), 차제관(次第觀), 원관(圓觀)이란 의미로 해 석하고 있으며, 이러한 관법은 결국 천태의 일심삼관을 의미한다는 점이다. 본고는 일심삼관의 구체적인 고찰을 통해 관세음의 관을 관법으로 해석하고 자 한 천태의 의도를 살펴보고자 했다.
그리고 관세음의 관이란 글자를 일심삼관이란 관법의 수행으로 이해하고 자 한 근본적인 이유는, 일심삼관이란 수행이 마음의 번뇌 망상을 제거하는 것에서 출발해서 중생을 제도하는 일로 확장된다는 점이다. 또한 일심삼관 의 수행을 통해 현실에 매몰되지 않고, 현실과 본질의 세계가 실상의 세계 임을 인식하게 된다는 점이다. 이러한 내용은 바로 ‘다양한 세상의 근기를 관찰하고 적절하게 응병여약(應病與藥)’하는 관세음의 속성과 형식적으로 상통하는 점이 있다. 결국 관음은 종교적 수행의 완성이며, 자기의지의 절대 적 실현을 의미한다. 따라서 천태는 관음을 객관화하지 않고, 주체적이며 자 기실현의 완결로 인식하고 있다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and arrange the Tientai-Seon understanding concerning belief in the Bodhisattva of Avalokitesvara. The belief in the Bodhisattva of Avalokitesvara, one of the important types of Noth-East Buddhist beliefs, was variously accepted by Chinese. And then Bodhisattva of Avalokitesvara was recognized as a transcendental being and was also supported by the people, and finally it was indigenous to China. And then, it was established as Niάng niάng belief or Sea-god belief. But Tientai Zhiyi did not agree with this religious idea but tried to understand Avalokitesvara in the perspective of practice. Tientai Zhiyi tried to understand Avalokitesvara in unique insight, one of peculiar practice of Tientai belief and the basic of it was Beophwamungu, the comments of the Lotus Sutra. In SeokGwanseumbosalbomunpm, Bodhisattva of Avalokitesvara is interpreted in 'Sipssang' and 'Ocheok' and in unique contemplation. In this paper, I attempted to interpreter and analyze Bodhisattva of Avalokitesvara focusing on 'Ocheok' based on insight. In 'Ocheok' of SeokGwanseumbosalbomunpum, Gwanseum is interpreted in word for word. In this case, 'Gwan' is understood based on insight: Geungwan, Chegwan, Chajegwan, and Wongwan. This insight (Gwanbeop) means Ilsimsamgwan of Tientai. Actually, Tientai interpreted 'Gwan' of 'Gwanseum' in Gwanbeop through the concrete investigation of Ilsimsamgwan. Hence, in this paper, I essayed to examine Tientai's intention like that. The fundamental reason why he tried to understand 'Gwan' of 'Gwanseum' in Gwanbeop practice of Ilsimsamgwan is that the practice of Ilsimsamgwan starts from the eradication of delusion and it comes to be extended into saving sentient beings. In addition, through the practice of Ilsimsamgwan, we don't become absorbed in the reality of life it, rather we come to realize that the world of real and essence is one of the real aspect. This fact has something in common with the attribute of Gwanseum who contemplates the real state of different world and makes out a good prescription. Eventually, Gwaneum is both the completion of religious practice and the absolute realization of self-will. Therefore, it is very significant that Tientai doesn't objectify Gwaneum but consider it the completion of subjective self-realization.
