This dissertation analyzes the origins of Jeontongjeewha in three Eastern Asian countries of Korea, China, and Japan. I also discuss the similarities and differences between these three by comparing the cultural transmissions and modifications of Jeontongjeewha through some representative examples. In the Buddhist ritual, the origin of offering Jeewha goes back to the ritual of offering artificial flowers for the salvation of dead ancestors, which is based on the Ullambana Sutra.
While at the present time Jeewhas are produced mostly for decoration purpose or Shamanistic rituals, we see many cases that they in fact originated from the Buddhist rituals. We can also conjecture that Jeewha production was especially active in the Eastern Asian countries with cold winters so that people can offer flowers throughout the seasons.
In China, Jeewhas, whcih originated from the Buddhist ritual, gradually expanded to the private religious spheres, and in this process they acquired magical significance. Through the cases of Chakjeewha and Jeonjeewha, we can also note that the expansion of functions resulted in the diversification of the forms. For instance, in the case of Bangamjeewha, Chinese style shows significant similarity with the Korean Jeontongjeewha in their production techniques and forms.
For Japanese Sikavana, even the Japanese folklorists have not yet come to a clear conclusion about its origin. It however seems to be a reinterpretation of Buddhist Gosa and application of it to the folk burials. It is also possible that the Japanese indigenous concept of “defensive boundary (Gyeol-Gye)” was applied for the Sikavana.
The basic function of Korean Jeontongjeewha is to decorate Shamanistic temples, Buddhist temples, or celebration tables. When it is used in the sacred rituals Jeontongjeewha bears religious significance. Outside the ritual context, it is mainly used as a decorative object which embodies some magical nature. In the case of Yoonhoemae, its restrained decorativeness is especially stressed. These decorative functions and religious significance seem to be the fundamental natures of Jeewhas.
