이 논문은 북한강유역에 분포하는 공방에서의 석기 생산방식을 살펴보기 위해 작성한 글이다. 공방의 물질적 지표로는 공방 내에 남겨진 내부시설과 생산흔적을 비롯해 돌감과 부산물, 제작도구, 각종 (미)완 성 석기류, 실패품, 토기류 등의 출토유물들이 있다. 지표분석을 통해 공방은 석기 생산을 주목적으로 한 별도의 생산 전용공간이며, 내부에서는 타격과 고타, 마연기술을 이용해「정형(1단계)-세부표현(2단계)-마무리(3단계)」의 보편적인 생산과정이 이루어졌음을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편, 분석과정에서 드러난 생산방식상의 특징과 공방의 성격은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 분기별로 공방에서 생산된 석기의 종류와 점유율 변화는 기본적으로 해당 시기의 수요 충족에 있다고 판단된다. 하지만 미완성 석기에 비해 완성석기의 점유율 격차가 큰 석부류는 생산과정에서 초래될 수 있는 실패율에 의한 것으로 추정되며, 현재까지 특정 기종만을 생산하거나 생산과정 중 일부 기법(술) 이나 과정만을 담당한 특수한 공방의 존재는 확인되지 않았다. 둘째, 공방에서 생산된 석기류 중에는 재사용 또는 재활용된 석기류가 많고, 완성 석기의 점유율이 상대적으로 높은 편에 속하는 석부류는 생산에 실패한 개체들이 많다. 공방 내에서 생산된 석기의 교환(역)의 가능성을 배제할 수는 없지만 교환(역)이 일정한 수준 이상의 생산기술과 생산량 확보를 전제한다는 점에서 자체수요를 주목적으로 석기를 생산했을 가능성이 높다고 판단된다. 셋째, 공방은 파손된 도구를 보수해 재사용(reuse)하고 생산과정에서 발생하는 실패품과 폐기된 토기류 등을 재가공해 다른 용도의 도구로 재활용(recycling)하는 장소로 활용되었다. 이와 같은 방식은 자원의 희소성을 극복하면서도 생산에 투입된 노동력과 시간을 절감하기 위한 효율적인 생산방식이다. 종합하면 북한강유역에 분포하는 공방은 공방이 속한 주거군집과 취락단위의 수요를 주목적으로 운영되었으며 새로운 석기의 생산과 더불어 보수와 재활용 등 다양한 방면으로 활용된 공간이다.

영어 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the production methods of stoneware at workshops scattered around the basin of Bukhan River. The material indicators of workshops include internal facilities and production traces left inside them, as well as excavated artifacts such as stone materials and their byproducts, manufacturing tools, all kinds of (un)complete stoneware, failures, and pottery. The analysis results of indicators show that the workshops provided separate space mainly dedicated to the production of stoneware and underwent a universal production process in three stages of patterning(Stage 1), expression of details(Stage 2), and finishing(Stage 3) by using the hitting, percussion, and polishing techniques inside. The analysis process found the following characteristics of production methods and nature of workshops: First, there were quarterly changes to the types and shares of stoneware produced at the workshops, and they were basically dependent on the needs at different times. The stone axes showed a huge gap in the share between the uncompleted ones and the complete ones, and the gap is estimated to have derived from the failure rate caused in the production process. The presence of special workshops has not been confirmed which produced only certain types of stoneware or were in charge of only some techniques(technologies) or processes in production. Secondly, there was a large amount of stoneware that was produced and then reused or recycled at the workshops. The percentage of production failure was high among stone axes whose share of complete ones was relatively high. There is a possibility that the stoneware produced at the workshops might have been exchanged or trade. It is highly likely that they must have produced stoneware mainly to meet their local needs since exchange and trade are on the premise of production technology and output at a certain level or higher. Finally, the workshops were utilized as the places where they reprocessed the failures, which happened in the production process of repairing and reusing damaged tools, and discarded pottery and then recycled them as tools of different purposes. It was an efficient production method to overcome the scarcity of resources and reduce labor and time invested in production. In short, the workshops in the basin of Bukhan River were managed to meet the local needs of residential clusters and settlement units where they belonged and utilized to serve various purposes including the production of new stoneware and the repair and recycling of old stoneware.
