영어 초록
Park Chan-wook is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, producer, and former film critic. Since his debut of 1992, Park has established unique and universal territory on his own by consistently digging within Korean contemporary actualities to make films fulfilling both popularity and artistry, novelty and unfamiliarity. The Vengeance Trilogy, consisting of 2002’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, 2003’s Oldboy and 2005’s Lady Vengeance, was a ‘well-made’ hit with both critics and viewers, which didn’t only help Park with establish a solid foothold in South Korean film market but also pave the way for the whole Korean industry to get through to the world film market. And it proves that he has stood at the front lines of South Korean film industry. Especially Oldboy was a long term box office success and seen by approximately 3,300,000 film-goers. The film won the ‘Grand Prize of the Jury’ at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. An American remake directed by Spike Lee with the same title was released in 2013. Oldboy is one of the most outstanding films not only of Park Chan-wook’s but also of South Korean film industry. Ancient mythologies and fables have the archetype which withstands any pressures of contexts and remains solidly unaffected. This archetype has constantly recalled neoteric’s primitive inner desires to the present. Park grafted the archetype and story compositions of the ancient Hellenic Oedipus myth upon the original text of Japanese comic book, out of which he achieves global universality. He also borrowed the narrative structure of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, and on the basis of which he selects, combines and reconstructs those compositions with Aristotle’s Plot theory to create the film Oldboy’s unique and universal aesthetic effect. Oldboy pursues the aesthetic reproduction of Aristotle’s Poetics’ dramatic theory. When it comes to a study of intertextuality between Oldboy and Oedipus Rex, the standard of ancient Greece tragedy, the narratives fall under influences of three main categories: ‘complication⋅ resolution and the enigmatic plot’, ‘the oracle of words and the complex plot’ and ‘the single whole and the ironic plot’. Oldboy is a culture content recalling cultural origin of the Western civilization to the Oriental value of the twenty-first century. Recently, for the purpose of globalization, our cultural contents also already have had to go through the process of discriminating gems from pebbles at the early stage of storytelling. But there still exist lifeless contents made out of a rough-and-ready production which only follows the times and trend. In this context, even over ten years after premiere, Oldboy which with its firm narrative structure rooted in the theory of Aristotle’s Poetics’ and aesthetic value brought on out of universal mythologies, won’t wane ever but become paragon has deep significance to us.
