The Role of Power & Knowledge in Orientalism
The common conception of the function of power in colonizing enterprises is that power can lead to political control, economic exploitation, territorial takeover, legal domination over inferior people, and many other forms of authority. However, Edward Said’s outlook on power is different in Orientalism. He states that knowledge can be used to establish power. Said emphasizes the power of the pen in particular. Western historians write about the Orient using their own subjective language, inevitably creating a bias towards the East. Thus, the colonizers have authority over knowledge. Unlike the common conception of the role of power in colonizing enterprises, Said expounds critical concepts including “hegemony” and “discourse.” These concepts are explored to illustrate how the East is studied by the West.
