This research consists of an analysis of the current state and the actual conditions of ‘The2014 School Field Contest of Discovering Exemplar Cases of Management of Exploration of the
Land’ through a survey. As a form of a large scale field trips has extremely shrunk after the Sewol
incident, schools have begun to search for alternative outdoor activities. ‘Land Exploration Program,’
planned and carried forward by the Ministry of Education prior to the Sewol incident, takes a form
of a small scale thematic field trip and is rising as a strong alternative to the large scale field trip
which has a high risk of accidents. For these reasons, suggesting a direction for small scale thematic
field trips by analyzing exemplar cases of the 2014 land exploration program is very timely. The
result of the research showed that land exploration programs can cultivate essential personality
values such as territorial attachment, patriotism, cooperation, responsibility and thoughtfulness. In addition, the following has been identified from the research; first, constant maintenance of land
exploration programs most actively requires a secured budget and simplification of administrative
procedures. Second, a training course for the teachers should include a plan for linking the learning
contents of students (geography, history and etc) and exploration programs. A training course for
safety should be set up independently. Lastly, the training course for the teachers should be in a
form of an occupational training. For both students and teachers, there is a need for providing
incentives through school records and rewards.
