Introduction
지속 가능한 조림/육림 기술에 있어 나무의 수령, 생장속도, 수령에 따른 생산량에 관한 정보는 필수적이다 (Devoe and Cole, 1998). 맹그로브의 경우 이러한 정보가 제한적인데, 대부분의 나무는 나이테 분석을 통해 정보를 얻을 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 기후 등 환경 변수와 생장과의 관계에 대한 정보도 얻을 수 있어 삼림 역학을 이해하는데 도움이 된다. 하지만, 보통 맹그로브와 같은 열대 수종에는 연륜이 없어 이러한 분석이 어렵다 (Detienne, 1989; Sass et al., 1995; Stahle, 1999). Rhizophora mucronata는 케냐의 우점 맹그로브로, 마찬가지로 생장륜이 없다고 보고되어 있다 (UNEP, 2001). 하지만, 저자가 수집한 R. mucronata 샘플들에서 명확하게 구분된 dark/light brown layers를 확인하였고, 생장륜이 없다는 보고를 재고해야 할 필요가 있었다.
