싱가폴에서는 (2008년 기준) 연간 무려 126만 톤가량의 폐지가 발생하지만, 폐지 재활용 기계 및 시설의 부족으로 인해 대부분을 주변국에 수출하고 있다. 사용 후 버려진 종이인 폐지는 lignocellulose로 이루어져 있는데, 이를 목질계 바이오에탄올 생산용 원료로서 이용할 수 있다면 폐지 재활용의 유용한 대체수단이 될 것이다. 폐지의 많은 양을 차지하는 폐신문지는 cellulose 40-55%, hemicellulose 20-40%, lignin 18-30%로 구성되어 있는데, 세 구성 성분이 유기적으로 결합하고 있어 분해가 힘들다는 특성 때문에, 그리고 당화 및 발효 효율에 악영향을 미치는 잉크를 제거하기 위해 전처리 공정이 필요하다.참고 자료
