There are three different lines of interpretation of Aristotle’s principle ofindividuation: i) Matter is the ‘individuator’ of things (SIM), ii) form is the
‘individuator’ of things (SIF), and iii) what individuates things is neither
matter nor form; but individuality is given as primitive (IN). A problem,
here, is that we can find textual evidence supporting each of these positions.
Those who pursue the line of (IN) maintain that it is not that form or matter
individuates things, but that form or matter is individuated by the primitively
given individuality in a particular. The issue at stake between proponents
and opponents of (IN) is whether or not it is possible that two numerically
different things have exactly the same form and matter. To refute (IN),
(SIM)‐supporters should show that each matter has at least one unique
property which the other matter does not have. On the other hand, (SIF)‐
defenders should show that there are particular forms. However, neither of
these is successful. Not only does (IN) provide the most plausible
explanation of a principle of individuation in general, (IN) can also provide
a more coherent explanation for the puzzling texts concerned with Aristotle’s
principle of individuation.
