ABSTRACT

한국어 초록

그간 교육사회학 연구영역에서 관심이 부족했지만, 고등교육에서의 지방대학과 수도권 대
학 간의 격차, 특히 대학 입학 이후의 학생들의 변화 과정과 결과의 격차의 문제는 교육사
회학 영역에서 관심을 기울이고 탐구할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국대학생핵심역량진
단 시스템(K-CESA)의 결과 자료를 활용하여 수도권 대학생과 지방 대학생 간의 격차를 핵
심역량의 관점에서 분석하였다. 핵심역량은 최근 지식기반산업사회로 이행되고 대학의 대중
화가 이루어지는 상황에서 대학에서 길러야 할 자질로서 학문적?실천적으로 관심이 증가되
고 있는 개념이다. K-CESA에 참여한 50여개의 3만 여명 학생을 대상으로 자료를 분석한
결과, 대학의 소재지에 따라 학생들의 다양한 핵심영역에서 일관된 격차를 볼 수 있었다. 수
도권 대학생에 비해 지방 대학생들의 핵심역량이 뚜렷하게 낮게 나타났으며, 이는 최근 심
화되는 수도권과 지방 대학 간의 학생자원 격차를 반영하는 결과이다. 특히 1학년에서 볼
수 있는 뚜렷한 격차는 입학 단계의 학생 자원의 차이를 확인해 주고 있다. 수도권 대학생
과 지방 대학생 간의 핵심역량격차는 학년이 올라갈수록 점차 줄어들고 있어 지방 대학생들
이 학년에 높아짐에 따라 역량이 증가되는 폭이 더 커져 대학생활을 거치면서 수도권 학생
들과 격차를 줄여가고 있는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 핵심역량진단의 결과는 지방 대학생들
이 수도권 대학생들에 비해서 핵심역량의 수준이 낮은 편이지만, 학년이 높아갈수록 격차의
정도가 줄어들어 대학과정을 통하여 지방 학생들의 격차가 감소하고 있음을 시사해 주고 있
다. 그러나 횡단적인 자료수집, 제한된 표집 등의 문제로 이러한 결과를 인과적인 의미나 전
국적인 상황으로 일반화하기에는 상당한 한계가 있다. 본 연구결과는 향후 대학교육과정을
실증적으로 살펴보는 연구를 촉진할 수 있으며 수도권과 지방대학생간의 핵심역량 격차의
원인, 격차의 변화 등에 대한 체계적인 연구를 축적하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어 초록

Inequality between universities located in Seoul Metropolitan area and those in local area
must be dealt with in sociology of education. Particularly, inequality in terms of education
process and results after entering college entrance should be analyzed in sociology of education
considering its theoretical and practical importance. In this research, the difference of core
competence between students in colleges located in Seoul Metropolitan area and those of
colleges located in local areas by utilizing the data drawn from Korean Collegiate Essential
Skills Assessment(K-CESA). Core competence, as basic competence to be educated during
college education has been regarded very important along with the transition to the
knowledge-based society and the universalization of higher education. K-CESA is composed of
6 competences, self-management, interpersonal competency, global competency, communication
competency, resources-information-technology utilization competency, and high-ordered thinking
competency. The analysis on the data of about 30,000 students' core competency level showed
the clear gap between two groups across 6 competencies. The gap in non-cognitive competency
such as interpersonal or self-management is smaller than in cognitive competency. The result of
the lower level of students in local area in general and freshmen in particular confirmed the
gap between the quality of students input depending on the location of the college and
university. Another important finding is that the gap decreased in accordance with education
year. That is the difference between two groups is much smaller in senior students rather than
freshman students. This result may imply the possibility that the local higher education
institutions has contributed to improving core competences of students better through their
educational process than their counterparts in Seoul Metropolitan. However, because of the limit
of the data such as cross-sectional data collecting from the limited sample, it should be
interpreted with a specific care for a causal relation and generalizability. This research may
contribute to increase of the interest of researchers in the area of sociology of education on
inequality and educational process in higher education.
