This study was intended to examine how family strengths influenced on the irrational gambling beliefby analysing depression as a mediating effect and the irrational gambling belief as a predictive variable and
depression acting as an indirect mediating role among male high school students. To achieve this objective,
family strengths were utilized as an independent variable; depression as a mediating variable; and irrational
gambling belief as an outcome variable. Subjects for this study consisted of 330 male high school students
in G. city and Junnam province in Korea. The data were collected from the 25th of October for one
month in 2010. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/Win 14.0 and AMOS 10.0. The results
of this study indicated that a partial mediation model where depression mediated the relationship between
family strengths and irrational gambling belief among male high school students was appropriate. By
examining the path coefficients among variables, it was also found that the higher the family strengths
became the lower the depression was; the higher the family strengths became the lower the irrational
gambling belief was. As a result of examining direct, indirect, and total effects, it was found that although
family strengths had a direct effect on irrational gambling belief, a total effect became even higher due to
an indirect effect of depression. Study implications were discussed in terms of ways of improving school
social workers’ programs for prevention and treatment methods for gambling problems among male high
school students.
